Even if there is a bunch of microbreweries in the greater Madrid area, there is only one operating in the city center. Basqueland Brewing from Hernani, a small town clos

Basqueland Brewing from Hernani, a small town close to the famous San Sebastian, is one of the most well known Spanish breweries, and proud to be an ambassador of the Basque Country. When we drove through the beautiful Basque Country

When we drove through the beautiful Basque Country, we stopped in Bilbao to visit Drunken Bros Brewery and taproom, a few kilometres from the city center. This was a very interesting visit, since Drunken Bros has just recently jumped from being a nomad brewery (since 2013) to brewing in their own physical brewery in Bilbao.Drunken Bros has a wide range of artisan beers in their selection, and they like to combine music and beer, which is visible in the labels and the names of the beers. A great example of this is their Memorial Series – a series of craft beers (mostly IPA’s) dedicated to legends. Of this series we tasted Layne NEIPA, Eddie NEIPA and B.B. DouGall’s microbrewery in small Lierganes village in Cantabria is one of the craft beer pioneers in Spain. The founder of the brewery, Andrew Dougall, is a true craft beer enthusiast, whose passion and dedication to artisan brewing has led to great results.The brewery was established back in 2006 and started with small equipment and three different beer styles. During the years the capacity and the number of crew has increased, and DouGall’s keeps growing still today. When we were in Santander, Cantabria, we shortly visited Smach microbrewery, that was established back in 2015. This family owned brewery is one of the not-so-many artisan breweries in Cantabria, and during the years they have been slowly educating the locals into craft beer culture and different beer styles.Smach brews are traditional craft beers, that are natural, without any artificial additives or preservatives. The beers are unfiltered, and fermented the second time in the bottle. From Madrid we continued to stunning Segovia, not only for sightseeing, but to visit SanFrutos brewery and to chat with the founders.Cerveza SanFrutos is an independent, family-owned craft brewery, that has produced quality artisan beers in Segovia since 2013. In addition to their flagship brews and temporary beers, SanFrutos does quite much collaborations and often brews for nomad breweries too. We tasted their delicious beers first time when we were in Malaga, and when visiting Segovia, it was great to get to know the brewery better.
