Craft beer in Croatia: Primarius craft pivovara
After visiting Varionica and Zmajska microbreweries, our craft beer tour in Croatia took us to PriMarius craft pivovara, a small, independent artisan brewery from Zagreb. PriMarius craft brewery was founded in 2017 by long-term beer enthusiast and awarded brewer Mario Zerjav, whose bearded profile can be seen in the brewery’s logo and labels, and his business partner Bruno Blažičko. PriMarius craft beers have been on the market since 2018, first as draft beers in pubs and restaurants, and since 2019 also in bottles.
From the idea of establishing a brewery to reality
Years of growth led to moving a new location
As the demand for the beer grew, more production space was needed, and a new brewery was built in the Hala Zagreb event center in spring 2024. During our visit in summer 2024, PriMarius beers were still brewed with the original, rustic, charming, self-assembled 500 liter brew-house, but new 20 hl equipment were to be taken in use soon. The beers are fermenter and matured in 20 hl fermenting vessels. Right next to the production area is PriMarius taproom, known as the Craft Oaza, that also doubles as a concert venue. It’s a great place to enjoy fresh craft beers with live music usually three times a week!
Tasting PriMarius craft beers
PriMarius brews artisan beers with expertise and passion, in both traditional and modern styles, from Pale Lager to IPAs and from Witbier to English Porter.
“In addition to the quality of the beers themselves and the constant enrichment of our offer with new interesting beer styles, the aesthetic component is also important to us, so we paid great attention to label design, for which we received a “special mention” award at the Best Label competition in Italy in 2020.”
The best place to taste the beers if of course the Craft Oaza taproom, but you can also find them in craft beer pubs and bottle shops in Zagreb and elsewhere in Croatia.
