Artisan breweries: Where the magic happens

Ljubljana and its surroundings are home to a several dedicated craft breweries pushing the boundaries of traditional brewing. During our craft beer travels in Slovenia, we visited two notable micro breweries who create their artisan beers in Ljubljana, Loo-Blah-Nah and Tektonik.

Tektonik Craft Brewery

TEKTONIK is an independent craft brewery that focuses on creating original recipes supported by knowledge of the rich tradition of English, Belgian, and German brewing practices.

The brewery and its taproom, TektoniX, were built in 2014, with the first beers hitting the market in May 2015. The founder and head brewer, Marko Jamnik, had already built a strong foundation as a home-brewer and beer specialist before turning his passion into a profession by establishing Tektonik. The brewery started with a  small 1000-liter brewhouse and nowadays brews two to three times a week using a modern, 2000-liter Slovenian Skrlj brewhouse, in total around 2000 hectoliters annually.

The core beers Tektonik are mostly hoppy IPAs and Pale Ales, but they do brew in wide scale and the taproom selection includes gems like their lovely house sour, a Fruited Gose with apricot. Tektonik is constantly innovating and creating new flavors – all together they have launched more than 150 different beers in their experimental ÖL beer series! In addition, there is the very special Wild League series with barrel-aged delicacies, like the recently launched Strong Ale, scented with Styrian Bobek and Styrian Golding hops and aged in a wooden barrel, that was previously used for the Gin Monkey47.

The TektoniX taproom, located right next to the brewery just a 5-minute walk from the Ljubljana railway station at Likozarjeva 1, is a wonderful venue for tasting Tektonik beers super fresh from eight taps, featuring both their core offerings and more experimental brews. The Tektonik crew is also happy to organize guided brewery tours to educate visitors about craft beer and brewing, complete with beer tastings. Regular tours are held on Fridays, and they are also available upon request on other days.

Tektonik’s core series includes the ČEHUR Czech Lager, the NORMAL Pale Ale, the MITZI Session IPA, the FAT LADY Hazy Pale Ale and the MURKY Hazy IPA. Under Begkönig label, there are the IKONIK Pale Ale and the IRONIK IPA in constant production. For the tenth anniversary in May 2025 (big congratulations!!), they launched the IGGY IPA10th anniversary IPA, re-brewing the first ever IPA that was ever brewed in Tektonik brewery.

Loo-Blah-Nah Craft Brewery

Playing on the phonetic spelling of the city’s name, Loo-Blah-Nah is a local favourite known for its passion for quality and natural ingredients. The story of Loo-Blah-Nah began in 2015, when two craft beer lovers, Miha Šnuderl and Igor Lazar, met with Domen Srebot, the most awarded home-brewer in Slovenia. The trio decided to start a joint brewing project, establishing the brewery in 2016 – writing this in May 2025, the brewery celebrated their 9th birthday, congratulations!

The first beers were brewed as a gypsy brewery in the Vizir brewery in Črnomalje, but soon the crew set up their own brewing facility in the Črnuče District in Ljubljana. Loo-Blah-Nah produces refreshing, highly drinkable beers with a modern, 2000-liter brewhouse. In 2019, a taproom opened right next to the brewery, offering a lovely place to taste Loo-Blah-Nah beers super fresh. Roughly 60 % of the beer is packed in kegs and served in taprooms and pubs, and the rest is bottled or canned.

This taproom offers a fantastic spot to sample fresh craft beers on tap in a historic setting. Keep an eye out for the weekly International Meetup events and Happy Hour offers!

Loo-Blah-Nah brews a range of handcrafted ales, from Blonde Ale with Slovenian aroma hops to a heavy Belgian Quadrupel, and there are special releases and occasional collaborations too. The core series of Loo-Blah-Nah currently includes five beers; Gold Ale, Pale Ale, Little IPA, American IPA and the Quadrupel. Altogether the brewery has created close to 50 different beers in different styles, and they make delicious apple cider too! Most of the beers are English-style, and actually they even have had an English Cask Ale, which is not common at all in Slovenia.

Craft beer in Ljubljana: pubs and bottle shops

As a popular tourist destination, Ljubljana is famous for having a huge amount of restaurants and bars. The selection of excellent craft beer pubs is more limited, but there are two that were frequently recommended to us by craft beer enthusiasts and brewers; Lajbah and Sir William’s Pub. In both of these venues you can sample a wide range of local and international craft beers in a relaxed atmosphere.

They boast an extensive selection of over 100 bottled beers, featuring a strong representation of local Slovenian craft breweries alongside renowned international names. Located in the Art Nouveau part of the city center, it’s a cozy spot that’s lively in the evenings and offers a more relaxed vibe during the daytime.

And then in the city center there is the :PROJEKT Beershop & Bar, a new venue with eight taps and a big selection of both local and international beers in cans and bottles.

Ljubljana’s craft beer scene is further enlivened by various events and festivals held throughout the year, especially during the summer season. These events provide fantastic opportunities to sample a wide range of Slovenian craft beer in Ljubljana, meet brewers and connect with fellow beer enthusiasts.
