Craft beer in Denmark: Alefarm, Gamma and Slowburn near Copenhagen

Published: April 19, 2026

Denmark may be a small Nordic country (at least if you don’t count in the landmass of Greenland), but when it comes to beer and brewing, it has strong roots and a vibrant beer culture. Huge brands dominate the market, like everywhere, but there are a lot of independent, small breweries focusing on quality over quantity. We made a small craft beer tour in the idyllic outskirts of the lively capital city Copenhagen in summer 2025, and introduce three great microbreweries from the area in this post!

Alefarm Brewing – from a farm to international fame

In Greve we had the pleasure to visit Alefarm Brewing, a tech-driven, modern microbrewery that produces delicious craft beers to Danish market and beyond. Alefarm was founded in 2015, and for the first two years the beers were brewed on an actual farm (hence the name), mostly focusing on Farmhouse Ales and barrel-fermented Wild Ales, but also creating craft beers in a variety of other styles. From the beginning, the idea was to focus both on domestic and international market.

“Alefarm Brewing is a tech-driven craft brewery with a focus on modern craftsmanship, authenticity and a genuine belief in the fact that quality is built on love.”

Since 2017 the brewery has operated in Greve, where they brew roughly 275 000 liters a year, with a 25 hectoliter Ant Systems brew-house. Around 20 % of the production is exported to other European countries, the biggest customers being from France and Netherlands. Alefarm uses domestic malts from Denmark, and also products of Viking Malts from Finland. The brewery utilizes a lot of European hops, from Great Britain, Slovenia, Germany and France, both for kettle hopping and dry hopping. The brewing team has even launched European IPA beers, with the aim to highlight that there are excellent, aromatic hops farmed also in Europe.

Alefarm core beer series incudes IPAs in different styles, also alcohol-free, and a modern Pilsner hopped with Saaz, Sterling & Motueka. In addition, Alefarm brews seasonal beers as well as regular new releases in different styles. Furthermore, there are a lot of collaboration beers, and they also have a barrel series, that includes Stouts, Porters and Wild Ales. Sounds fantastic, right? The crew states that they are on a journey to explore craft beer, with ambition to bring people together through carefully crafted experiences with beer.

To mention some of the beers that we got to taste in summer 2025, we loved the This Side of the Pond European IPA, the A Soft Place to Fall Session IPA and the Sparrows DIPA.

The best place to taste Alefarm beers super fresh is of course their beautiful taproom right next to the production area in Greve (open on Fridays and Saturdays) or their new taproom in Copenhagen, right by the Dronning Louises Bro bridge Furthermore, you can find them in craft beer pubs and bottle shops in Copenhagen and around in Denmark, and in several supermarkets too.

Gamma has gained fame with their high-quality NEIPAs

Gamma Brewing Co was founded in early 2015 by five friends, who met through bartending in the craft beer pubs of Copenhagen. At first it was just a small-scale side-hustle, but in 2018 it was time to find out, if the brewery could be a full time project. In 2020-2021 a brand new brewery, with a 2500-liter brewhouse, was built in a large warehouse in Herlev, just outside Copenhagen.

From the beginning Gamma has focused not just on regional or domestic sales, but also international craft beer market, with high quality as the most important value in brewing. The crew primarily focuses on brewing hop-forward beers, but they do have a wide variety of styles in their product range. Gamma is best known for their juicy NEIPA style craft beers, that during the past few years have gained quite a lot international attention. Beer enthusiasts in Denmark and beyond appreciate Gamma’s ability to keep hop aromas fresh and avoid many of the off-flavors associated with cloudy beers.

Gamma keeps releasing new beers, but they also have a core series, that includes sevaral IPAs, but also a crispy Pilsner, a smooth Vienna Lager and a fruited Sour with raspberry, rhubarb, and blackcurrant. Gamma’s graphical labels are easily recognizable, and nowadays you can find Gamma cans in bottle shops around Europe. Gamma also makes quite a lot of international collaborations, and participates in beer festivals around the continent.

During our quick visit to the taproom at the brewery in July 2025, we tasted the Freak Wave, Gamma’s delicious flagship NEIPA hopped with Azacca, Citra and Mosaic, and the heavily hopped Black Doink Black IPA, a lovely 8 % ABV brew with plenty of roasted malts and chocolatey aromas, but a bitter, piney flavor profile before the toasted finish.

Slowburn's beers are brewed within the walls of an old prison

Slowburn Brewing Co-op is a staff-owned cooperative brewery, located in the Porten Vridsløse cultural hub, in the handsome former Vridsløselille Prison in Albertslund, just outside Copenhagen. The taproom pub right next to the brewery is open from Wednesdays to Saturdays, and in addition to tasting the beers, visitors can participate in pop-up events, that are focused on community through art, music, food, science (and great beer of course).

The brewery was founded in 2019 and the new brewery taproom in the former prison was opened in spring 2023. Slowburn craft beers are brewed with a 600-liter brewhouse, packed in kegs and cans, and sold mostly in and around Copenhagen. Being worker-owned means, that business is democratically run and governed by the working members of the cooperative via a general assembly.

“We all have an equal say applying the principle of “one head, one vote”. We want to create a sustainable and inclusive workplace that is more than just a brewery, and where profits and activities benefit the workers and our surrounding community.”

Slowburn Brewing Co-op focuses on their beers in quality, consistency and drinkability. They create craft beers in a variety of styles, from traditional beers to modern styles, and also have a barrel series with mixed fermentation wild ales aged in wine barrels. The beautiful, nature-themed graphics are drawn by a local artist.

During our short visit we tasted two delicious Slowburn IPAs; the creamy, core series Vox Populi NEIPA with tropical touch and resinous notes (DDH with Citra and Mosaic) and the moderately bitter, fruity Planet Caravan West Coast IPA with piney notes and herbal finish (dry-hopped with Chinook, Simcoe and Mosaic).
