Craft beer in Denmark: Alefarm, Gamma and Slowburn near Copenhagen
Denmark may be a small Nordic country (at least if you don’t count in the landmass of Greenland), but when it comes to beer and brewing, it has strong roots and a vibrant beer culture. Huge brands dominate the market, like everywhere, but there are a lot of independent, small breweries focusing on quality over quantity. We made a small craft beer tour in the idyllic outskirts of the lively capital city Copenhagen in summer 2025, and introduce three great microbreweries from the area in this post!

Alefarm Brewing – from a farm to international fame

“Alefarm Brewing is a tech-driven craft brewery with a focus on modern craftsmanship, authenticity and a genuine belief in the fact that quality is built on love.”

Alefarm core beer series incudes IPAs in different styles, also alcohol-free, and a modern Pilsner hopped with Saaz, Sterling & Motueka. In addition, Alefarm brews seasonal beers as well as regular new releases in different styles. Furthermore, there are a lot of collaboration beers, and they also have a barrel series, that includes Stouts, Porters and Wild Ales. Sounds fantastic, right? The crew states that they are on a journey to explore craft beer, with ambition to bring people together through carefully crafted experiences with beer.

To mention some of the beers that we got to taste in summer 2025, we loved the This Side of the Pond European IPA, the A Soft Place to Fall Session IPA and the Sparrows DIPA.

The best place to taste Alefarm beers super fresh is of course their beautiful taproom right next to the production area in Greve (open on Fridays and Saturdays) or their new taproom in Copenhagen, right by the Dronning Louises Bro bridge Furthermore, you can find them in craft beer pubs and bottle shops in Copenhagen and around in Denmark, and in several supermarkets too.

Gamma has gained fame with their high-quality NEIPAs

During our quick visit to the taproom at the brewery in July 2025, we tasted the Freak Wave, Gamma’s delicious flagship NEIPA hopped with Azacca, Citra and Mosaic, and the heavily hopped Black Doink Black IPA, a lovely 8 % ABV brew with plenty of roasted malts and chocolatey aromas, but a bitter, piney flavor profile before the toasted finish.

And a tip for those who visit the capital but can’t make it to Herlev; check out the Gamma NV taproom restaurant in Nordvest in Copenhagen!

Slowburn's beers are brewed within the walls of an old prison

“We all have an equal say applying the principle of “one head, one vote”. We want to create a sustainable and inclusive workplace that is more than just a brewery, and where profits and activities benefit the workers and our surrounding community.”

During our short visit we tasted two delicious Slowburn IPAs; the creamy, core series Vox Populi NEIPA with tropical touch and resinous notes (DDH with Citra and Mosaic) and the moderately bitter, fruity Planet Caravan West Coast IPA with piney notes and herbal finish (dry-hopped with Chinook, Simcoe and Mosaic).
