Craft beer in Alsace, France: Les Intenables Craft Beer and Mogwaï Beer Company
France is one of the world’s most famous wine countries and shares the status of the world’s largest wine producer with Italy, with an annual production of around 45 million hectoliters. Wine is a strong part of French culture, and wine tourism is popular in the country’s numerous wine regions. In addition to wines, France also produces a wide range of spirits, the most famous of which is cognac. When it comes to beer, France has been undergoing a transformation from small traditional village breweries to the world of modern craft beer.

In this post we continue brewery introductions from the Alsace region located on the German border. Alsace is very well known for its wines, but this beautiful area is also the most significant beer region in France, producing roughly 60% of the beer produced in the country. Alsatian breweries create both traditional and modern beers, and Alsace is also a hop growing region, producing quite a lot of bittering hops and new aroma hop varieties. During our travels in Alsace in the summer of 2025 we visited two fantastic Alsatian microbreweries, Les Intenables and Mogwaï Beer Company, and learned that the craft beer culture has developed a lot since our last brewery tour in the region in 2021.

Les Intenables is best known for heavily hopped IPAs

Les Intenables brews a wide range of quality beers, from Hoppy Lagers to fruit-flavored Sours and from unique IPAs to barrel-aged Imperial Stouts. The brewery is particularly known for its boldly hopped West Coast and juicy New England IPAs. During our visit we got to taste the then just released Bitter Trail IPA straight our of the canning line – an excellent example of West Coast style IPA, bitingly bitter but well balanced. Les Intenables has a core series of six beers, and the brewery launches 3–4 new beers every month. In 2025, Les Intenables brewed in total 3,4 HL, in 26 beer styles, and released 55 new beers plus 8 collaboration beers with local and international breweries.

The brewery renewed their labels in 2023, and the core beers are easy to recognize from their white labels with single-color figure on them. The core series includes Crispy Chill Hoppy Lager, Mama Whipa White Hazy IPA, Tropical Therapy NEIPA, Lime Combo Blanche with Lemon & Kaffir Lime, Retro Killer American Amber Ale, Kanish Royal Sour with Cassis and Mega Trip Belgian Triple. There are be also other beer series, like the Team Series with favorite styles of the brewery team (of which we tasted the delicious Arcane Moon Black IPA and the smokey Play With Fire Schwarzbier) and the Muffin Series of Pastry Sours.

The first barrel-aged beers were released in 2023, and since then Les Intenables has brought delicious, intense BA Stouts and sophisticated, funky BA Sainons to the market. The Cuvée 31 Saison series includes wine-barrel aged delicacies, the latest 2026 releases being Cuvée 31 – Pinot Noir 2025 and Cuvée 31 – Riesling 2025. When it comes to the dark BA beers, Les Intenables has excellent Imperial Stouts aged in spirit barrels. When writing this article, the latest release is Boa – Jamaican Rum B.A, an Imperial Stout, aged for 18 month in Jamaican rum barrels.

Les Intenables is a familiar sight at beer festivals and various other beer events in France and elsewhere in Europe. In the near future, the brewery plans to move to even larger premises and open its own taproom restaurant next to the brewery. Currently, Les Intenables’ craft beers can be purchased from the brewery shop located right next to the current brewery in Rosheim, and they are available in a bunch of pubs and beer shops across France, and also internationally.

Mogwaï Beer Company is bursting with ideas and knows how to surprise
Mogwaï is a young and inventive microbrewery, founded in 2022 in Mundolsheim, north from Strasbourg. Mogwaï is known for their bold IPAs, fruity Sours and experimental specialty beers with the most surprising ingredients and flavor combinations.

Mogwaï has no core range, and most of the products are only brewed once. New beers are usually released in series of 4-6 beers, every six weeks. Some of the beers are traditional in style, but Mogwaï’s approach involves constant surprises and playing with ingredients, and fans of the brewery are always looking forward to innovative new releases. Some of the most unusual releases include the Baeckeoffe (Alsatian meat stew) -style Gose with potatoes, carrots, onions, leeks, thyme, bay leaves, salt and pepper, and a malt base that contains smoked malts to give the beer a meaty flavor.

A slightly more moderate experimental section is represented for example by the SirtaKiss Tzaziki Gose, of which there has been several versions. We tasted the summer 2025 version – a light, refreshing summer beer with a minty and citric aroma, and a surprisingly balanced flavor profile, combining cucumber and lime, as well as the characteristic, nice saltiness of Gose. The Mogwaï team tests the wildest recipe ideas on a small brewing kit, and they are taken to production in a 500-liter brewhouse.

In 2025 Mogwaï released 44 new beers and did altogether 14 collaboration beers with local and international friends. The team participated in dozens of festivals and tap takeover events, gathering friends of craft beer together to taste both traditional and experimental brews. Majority of the production is sold in pubs and bottle shops around France, and around 7 % of the volume is exported to elsewhere in Europe. Mogwaï is a small and agile brewery, and wants to stay that way, but in the future the goal is to grow moderately and move to a slightly larger space. There are also plans to establish their own taproom, where also beer and food pairing could be done.

When we visited in July 2025, recently released beers included for example a heavily hopped, deliciously bitter 90-minute IPA called Mellon Collie And the Infinite Hoppiness, and a light but hoppy Mexican Lager called Abracalavera. We also got to taste the first Wild Ale of Mogwaï, called Never Again – 2023 // Cerises //. This tart, funky Wild Ale was made with three types of cherries and bottled after 20 months of maturation in 2025.
Alsace as a beer travel destination
The Alsace region is best known for its wine routes and wineries offering various tasting packages, but big steps have also been taken in the field of beer tourism. There are dozens of breweries in the region, and the aim is to better highlight their activities as part of the food and drink culture. In the Strasbourg and Colmar areas, various brewery tours with beer tastings, beer events and beer courses are available.
