Craft beer in Finland: Mad Finn Brewing Co. from Ylöjärvi

Published: May 19, 2026

Our hoppy road trip in Tampere region continued from Himo in Pirkkala to Ylöjärvi, a growing town just west of Tampere. This town, known for beautiful natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage, is home to the brewery and taproom restaurant of the talented, innovative Mad Finn Brewing Co!
(We visited Mad Finn in late summer 2025, and unfortunately by the time we are publishing this blog post, the brewery has been declared bankrupt. But we want to introduce it anyway, and we sincerely hope that the brewery will overcome its financial difficulties.)

Mad Finn Brewing Co. opened their first brewery and distillery in the Trikoo area of Pyynikki in Tampere in July 2022. Since then, this independent microbrewery has been bringing tasty craft beer to Finnish market, and growing steadily. In late 2023 they built a brand new brewery in a warehouse building in Ylöjärvi, and the distillery operations still continue in the first location in Tampere.

Mad Finn honours Finnish flavors and the Finnish spirit

The team behind Mad Finn is international in that sense, that Jay, one of the founders, is originally from Australia, but the beer they brew has deep roots in the Finnish culture. The crew states that they are inspired by the resilience of Finnish people and the changing beauty of the seasons.

“Every beer we brew reflects Finnish flavors and the Finnish spirit. You can taste echoes of the fresh and bright days of summer or you can wrap yourself up while drinking a beer and enjoy the dark winter evenings.”

Where as the first Mad Finn craft beers were brewed in Pyynikki with a small, 300-liter brewing system, the Ylöjärvi brewery is sizeable and modern. The 2200-liter, semi-automated, full-steam brewhouse was ordered from the US, and there are four 3000-liter fermenting tanks as well as smaller tanks and two lagering vessels. Roughly 40 % of the production is kegged and sold mostly in Mad Finn taprooms, and the rest is canned and sold both in supermarkets and in taprooms.

Mad Finn craft beers come in a variety of styles, from crispy, crushable Lagers to different styles of IPAs and Fruited Sours all the way to (barrel-aged) Imperial Stouts. Lager is the best selling style, but Mad Finn is well-known for their IPAs too. In addition to beers, Mad Finn also produces soft drinks like hop water.

One of the most popular Mad Finn beers is their Noniin Double NEIPA. Noniin, or no niin, is a Finnish expression with a huge amount of different translations, depending on how it is “pronounced”. Straight translation would be “Oh, well”, but Noniin can be said in so many ways, that the “Funniest Person in the World”, Finnish comedian Ismo has stated that it is the most important word or expression in the whole Finnish language and made a bunch of jokes about it.

To mention some other favorites of the Mad Finn craft beers that we got to taste in summer and autumn 2025, we liked a lot the Sunless Days Imperial Porter and the 1000 Lakes Rally Golden Ale.

The Ylöjärvi taproom right next to the brewery of course is a wonderful venue to taste the beers, and to combine them with mouth-watering pizza or BBQ, but of you can’t make it to Ylöjärvi, please note that there are Mad Finn taprooms and pizza restaurants also in Tampere and Helsinki! We do recommend to heading to the brewery though, as there are guided brewery tours and events, and in the summer session there is a large, sunny outdoor terrace area, perfect for beer tasting and having a tasty lunch or dinner.
