Craft beer in Romania: Bereta Brewing Co.

Romania may not be the most famous beer country, but did you know that there is a handful of excellent, internationally operating microbreweries? In this post we take you to one of the most popular breweries of the country, the fantastic Bereta Brewing Co. from the beautiful, historical city of Timișoara!

Bereta Brewing Co. is an independent microbrewery that craft beer enthusiasts from all over Europe know for their excellent quality and innovative take on creating new beers. The Bereta crew refuses to follow trends, but instead brews beers that they love, with passion, courage and the best ingredients. Beyond brewing, the Bereta team plays a significant role in building the local craft community, and their taproom is the place for beer geeks to gather together around delicious craft brews.

From home-brewing gypsies to craft beer pioneers

The story of Bereta began more than 10 years ago with home-brewing, which led founders Adrian Biebel and Silviu Burtă to become the first gypsy brewers of Romania. These two passionate craft beer enthusiasts and home brewers felt that Romania’s beer scene was missing the bold, modern beer styles that had become super popular across Western Europe, and North America of course. They spent a lot of time perfecting their brewing processes, testing different hops and creating recipes with small home-brewing kits, and in 2016 it was time to officially establish Bereta.

The operations started as a contract brewery, which means that the team utilized existing breweries equipment, but their own methods and recipes. In the very first year, 2016, the young crew released their first New England IPA, the iconic Juicebag. At the time, hazy IPAs were a novelty in Romania, but Juicebag took the market by storm, earning Bereta the title of Best Beer in Romania by RateBeer in their very first year of operation.

In the summer of 2018, Bereta Brewing transitioned from contract brewing to operating their own microbrewery. Since then, they have launched hundreds of beers across a wide range of styles, evolving from one of the craft beer pioneers of Romania into one of Eastern Europe’s most respected artisan brands.

The Bereta brewery and beer lineup

The Bereta magic happens in Giarmata, the outskirts of Timișoara, in an industrial area, where the modern Bereta brewery was built. The crew crafts the beers using a 10 hl semi-automatic brew house, producing roughly 70,000 liters annually. Throughout the brewing process, the focuses is heavily on quality control. The batches are small and the crew constantly keeps experimenting and developing new recipes.

While heavily hopped IPAs and juicy New England IPAs put Bereta on the beer map of Romania and Eastern Europe in general, the brewery’s portfolio reaches far beyond. Bereta is still well-known for their delicious, hop-forward IPAs in different styles, but craft beer enthusiasts also look forward to all the new releases in other styles. Especially the barrel-aged Imperial Stouts and fruity Smoothie Sours are highly rated.

Bereta has a core series of four beers; mostly IPAs, including the iconic Juicebag but there is also an excellent Helles style Lager, called Social Drink. New beers are released almost on weekly basis, and there is always also something aging in barrels. During our visit we got to taste for example an excellent, thick Pumkin Cinnamon Smoothie Sour with tons of fruits in it, and a delicious, coconut infused Barleywine, aged in French Bourbon barrels – a lovely, sweet, warming brew with roasted aroma and delicious notes of coconut in the dark flavor profile. To mention a couple of favorites of the canned beers that we tasted, we loved The Jelly School Double NEIPA, TM: Tombabe Fruited Sour and The Holy, an Imperial Stout with Chili and Chocolate.

The Bereta crew does not cut corners when implementing even their craziest ideas, even if it requires expensive raw materials or experimental techniques. And the results speak for themselves.

Bereta Taproom & Bottleshop

While a large portion of the Bereta production is nowadays exported to craft beer spots across Europe, you can naturally find their freshest releases in Romanian taprooms and craft beer oriented pubs. The best place to taste them super fresh obviously is the Bereta Taproom & Bottleshop in the heart of Timișoara. This small taproom bar offers a rotating selection of the newest releases on draft, including limited-edition bottle/can drops, and a welcoming vibe that makes it a highlight of any (beer) trip to Timișoara.
