Craft beer in Poland: Stu Mostów brews quality beers in Wrocław

Published: November 30, 2024
There are several beautiful cities in Poland, and as we have also stated before, Poland is a great destination for (beer) traveling! Warsaw and Krakow are the most popular travel destinations, and both of them great for craft beer enthusiasts too, but have you heard about Wrocław? Wrocław is the fourth largest city of Poland, located in Lower Silesia, southwestern part of the country. Wrocław is often referred as the Venice of Poland, as it’s built on 12 islands and there are plenty of bridges. There is a stunning Old Town, wonderful historical buildings, hundreds of cute draft statues and a great microbrewery, Browar Stu Mostów!

We had a pleasure to visit Stu Mostów in summer 2024, when we stayed in Wrocław for a week exploring the city. Stu Mostów is actually named after the bridges of Wrocław; Stu Mostów translates to hundred bridges. Wrocław is a city with rich brewing traditions since the medieval times, and decades ago there used to be dozens of breweries making especially Wheat Beer and Pilsner. Now Browar Stu Mostów is writing a new chapter in the beer history of Wrocław, creating quality craft beers both in traditional and modern styles.

Craft beer from Wrocław with passion and creativity

Stu Mostów was founded with a mission to offer something that the founders would like to receive themselves, the best craft beer, with an ambition to become Poland’s number one.

“We see creativity as the value on which we can build a strong Polish brand, with a potential for success and capable of competing with the mainstream brewing industry.”

Browar Stu Mostów was founded in 2014, and the first beers were launched in 2015. The modern brewery is located in a handsome old brick building on Jana Długosza street, near Warszawski Bridge in Karłowice neighborhood,. a bit outside the city center of Wrocław. Stu Mostów craft beers are brewed with a 20 hectolitre, two-vessel brew house, nowadays up to four batches a day in two shifts. The brew-house itselg is original, but the brewery has already been expanded already three times, as the popularity of the beers has grown and more volume has been needed.

In 2023 Stu Mostów brewed 10 000 hectoliters in total, and in 2024, when brewery celebrates 10 years anniversary, the total volume will exceed million liters, being around 12 000 hectos. Majority of the production is sold in and around Wrocław, but you can also find Stu Mostów beers elsewhere in Poland, and abroad too – the beers are exported for example to Germany, Spain, Italy and Sweden. The brewery also does quite a lot of collaborations with both Polish and international breweries. 30-35 % of the production is packed in kegs and sold in taprooms, pubs and restaurants, and the rest is canned / bottled and sold in grocery stores, bottles shops and in pubs of course too.

The beer range, that can be divided in different series / brands is impressive, and Stu Mostów still keeps launching new beers regularly, 3-4 times a month. WRCLW beer series / subsidiary brand is all about redefining the classic beers. It’s more a local brand, including Stu Mostów’s versions of traditional beer styles, also of historical styles like the local Schöps wheat beer from Wrocław. The yellow-labelled Stu Mostów series is the so-called base series, that includes a wide range of stuff from Sours to IPAs and Stouts, and the Art series is all about creative collaboration beers. Then there is Wild Beer series, seasonal beers and specials releases too, and let’s not forget the non-alcoholic options – there is a Lemon Radler and a Berliner Weisse Peach & Apricot.

In addition to all this, Stu Mostów has a separate barrel project. They first started making BA beers more than four years ago, and since 2021 they have created wild beers with a separate brew-house and a series of smaller fermenting vessels. The barrel range includes aged and blended Wild Ales as well as dark and strong barrel-aged Stouts and Barleywines.

The Beer Geek Madness Festival

Since 2014 Browar Stu Mostów has organized an annual craft beer festival called Beer Geek Madness, that turns Wrocław into an international beer city every spring. This event, held in Wrocław’s former tram depot, Czasoprzestrzeń, gathers together over 50 breweries from Poland and abroad, and more than 2500 beer enthusiasts. The festival offers a great chance to taste a wide variety of craft beers, including special editions brewed for the festival combined with food and live concerts. The 2025 edition will be organized in 25.-26.4.2025 – add it in your calendar now!

Tasting Stu Mostów beers

The best place to taste Stu Mostów beers super fresh is of course the wonderful brewery taproom restaurant right next to the production area. In the brewery taproom, there are 10 beer taps, and also a great kitchen offering delicious meals from snacks all the way to desserts! There are also brewery tours available. Oh and in the same building, there is a place called Concept Stu Mostów, a bakery (that utilizes part of the spent grain from the brewery) and a beer store.

Whenever we are in Poland, we love to taste Stu Mostów beers, since they never disappoint! Of the beers that we tasted when visiting the brewery, our favorite was Eclipse Elixir, an intense and strong, blended barrel-aged Imperial Pastry Stout. We also liked a lot for example the smoothie-like Tropical Goze and the Berliner Weisse Strawberry, a light, nicely sour summer beer. From the can selection we tasted in Wrocław the fruity Floccus Sour IPA (collaboration with Floc. Brewing) and the hoppy, grapefruity and resinous Verdancy DDH Pale Ale (collaboration with Verdant Brewing co), both delicious artisan beers. Of the non alcoholic beers we tasted a fruited Berliner Weisse with peach and apricot – a fruity, tasty and refreshing option, especially great in hot weather.

In addition to the brewery taproom, Stu Mostów has another multi-tap restaurant in Wrocław, the Swidnicka Stu Mostów Bistro and Taproom in the beautiful old town. And in fact there is a third location too, the Stu Mostów Sports Bar in Tarczyński Arena Stadium.

“We want our beers and the idea behind them to become a contribution to conversations about respect, equality and shared responsibility for the shape of the world we live in. Hence, creating the most beautiful bridges between people, cities and countries, as well as between history, the present and the future.”
